
The Opportunity
One of the largest global food and beverage companies partnered with PTI to create a “playbook” to be used as a guidebook for integrating recycled content into their packaging. It was asked that the structure of the playbook be cross-functional and accessible to a variety of teams with different backgrounds including, technical, brand, marketing and purchasing teams.
The objective of the playbook was to provide guidance and best practices when considering recycled content integration across their key rigid packaging formats – including PET and HDPE blow molded bottles, closures, injection molded containers and thermoformed trays.
The Innovation
Team members from PTI’s material science, engineering and Marketing teams collaborated with the client on both content and layout of the playbook. The collective teams dove deep into several key areas that necessitate a technical and business considerations when integrating recycled content into packaging, including:
- Providing a competitive assessment of recycled content usage
- A deeper understanding of what drives availability and pricing of recycled resin
- Education about the North American recycling process so that designers and engineers understand what can impact the end-of-life journey for packaging designed for recycling
- Guidance for the usage of recycled content and the recyclability of packaging


The Outcome
Through a collaborative effort between PTI and the client, we were able to provide an interactive, easy-to-navigate tool focused on recycled content integration that is being used throughout the organization for the entire North American rigid package portfolio.
